The City of Sydney Grants program is run by the City of Sydney Council to support initiatives and projects that strengthen the social, cultural, environmental and economic life of the city of Sydney.

The City of Sydney Grants for Business has a range of areas they target and have different opening times.

What Grants are available for Businesses

Grants open all year round till budget is exhausted

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collaboration fund

Summer Grants –applications open 7 February 2023 and close 7 March 2023

  • Business sector support grant
  • Creative grant
  • Festivals and events sponsorship
  • Green building grant
  • Innovation and ideas grant

Winter Grants – application will open 25 July 2023 and close 22 August 2023

  • Innovation and ideas grant

General Eligibility for the City of Sydney Grants

To be eligible for the City of Sydney grants, applicants must:

  • operate within the City of Sydney’s local government area or be able to demonstrate significant benefits for the area’s residents, workers and/or visitors
  • meet the grant program eligibility criteria stated in the guidelines
  • have acquitted any previous City of Sydney grants or sponsorships and met all contractual obligations
  • have no outstanding debts owing to the City of Sydney
  • demonstrate the grant will be used for a purpose in the public interest
  • demonstrate capacity to deliver the project
  • be financially viable.

The project must not duplicate existing services or programs and must be for future expenditure.

Assessment Process

All City of Sydney grants are competitive and each application is assessed against the specific requirements for each grant.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collaboration fund

This program supports a strong and sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled sector to deliver projects that meet the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the local area.

Cash funding up to $50,000 is available, for projects to be delivered within 12 months

Business sector support grant

This program supports sector development projects that grow the skills and capacity of local businesses, entrepreneurs and communities, advocate on key issues on behalf of local business, connect businesses to networking opportunities and promote local precincts.

Cash funding from $10,000 to $50,000 per year is available, for a one-year program or multi-year funding (up to 3 years).

Creative grant

This program supports projects and initiatives that contribute to Sydney’s cultural life, provide opportunities for creative participation, enliven public spaces, and strengthen the sustainability and capacity of our cultural and creative industries.

Cash funding from $10,000 to $50,000 per year is available, for a one-year program or multi-year funding (up to 3 years).

Festivals and events sponsorship

This program provides Support for festivals and events.

Cash funding up to $50,000 (tier 1) or $100,000 (tier 2) per year is available, for a one-year program or multi-year funding (up to 3 years).

Green building grant       

This program supports owners’ corporations and building owners in the residential and accommodation sector to undertake environmental ratings, certifications, audits and assessments for existing buildings to be resource efficient and achieve net zero emissions by 2035.

Cash funding up to $15,000 is available per project (but for-profit organisations are required to match the funding requested with cash).

Innovation and ideas grant

This program supports projects that foster innovation, showcase local expertise and test new ideas to address local and global issues across the city’s social, cultural, sustainability and business sectors.

Cash funding from $10,000 to $50,000 per year is available, for a one-year program or multi-year funding (up to 3 years).
