What does an Outsourced CFO do?
Sometimes I get asked, “What does an Outsourced CFO do?”
To answer that, it helps to first understand what a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) does.
A CFO is usually the most senior financial person in a business and is responsible for overseeing its financial health and direction. This typically includes:
- Cash flow management and optimisation
Ensuring the business has enough cash to meet its obligations and grow sustainably. - Business strategy
Supporting decision-making, investment reviews, and long-term direction. - Business planning
Developing short- and long-term plans, budgets, forecasts, and scenario models, often to support funding or growth decisions. - Reporting
Preparing meaningful management and financial reports that support better decisions. - Financial operations
Improving systems, processes, and controls to increase efficiency and accuracy. - Financial compliance
Ensuring the business meets its regulatory and tax obligations. - Risk management
Identifying and managing financial risks before they become problems.
In larger organisations, this is usually a full-time role.
But many businesses simply can’t justify the cost of a full-time CFO.
