Celebrating 23 years as an Outsourced CFO
Today is the 23rd birthday for my Outsourced CFO (Chief Financial Officer) business.
The reason why I started this business in 2000 was that at the time I was working as the Australian CF0 of a large multinational business. But I had minimal ability to profitably influence the business as nearly everything had to be referred through several layers till it finally reached HO in the US.
I got sick of this, and decided I only wanted to to work directly with people who could make decisions. These were the business owners, founders and CEO’s of small, medium and start-up businesses.
But then, like it still is the case today, very few of these businesses could afford to employ me on a full basis. So that’s why I offered my services on a part time basis to small, businesses. All for a fraction of the cost of a full-time employee.
At the time, I was probably one of the first people to offer CFO services this way in Australia.
Despite the world changing a lot since 2000, the money issues facing business have largely remained the same. If I look back at my very first website in 2001 (was a bit ugly by todays standards), I focused on issues such as:
- Inadequate (if any) cash flow forecasting and business planning
- Inaccurate, unreliable, untimely or non-existent business performance reporting
- Poor on non-existent strategic planning
- Lack of knowledge of the profitability of a product or service
- The isolation of the CEO / founder with no one to bounce ideas off
And 23 years later, these are often the same issues I still see.
So, my outsourced CFO services remains focused on helping business owners, founders and CEO’s of small, medium and start-up businesses, not only count the beans, but have more beans to count. All so they successfully survive and thrive in these uncertain times.
