How Businesses Can Use AEA Ignite to Co-Develop New Technology with Universities

If your business has an innovation idea but early-stage R&D feels too risky or expensive, AEA Ignite is designed to help de-risk that first step by funding university-led projects with strong industry involvement.

AEA Ignite (as part of the Australias Economic Accelerator program) provides up to $500,000 in government funding to support proof-of-concept and early prototype development. While only universities can apply as the Lead Organisation, they need businesses to partner, helping shape the project around real commercial needs.

As a business partner, you can be involved in:

  • Defining the commercial problem and market need
  • Testing prototypes in operational or simulated environments
  • Providing technical input, data, facilities, or staff time
  • Supporting regulatory, manufacturing, and go-to-market pathways

Projects must align to national priority sectors such as advanced manufacturing, ag-tech, med-tech, renewables, AI, space and critical minerals, making this especially relevant for industrial and technology-driven SMEs.

Partner organisations are expected to contribute to the project (minimum 10% combined cash and/or in-kind across all partners), but in return you gain:

  • Access to university research capability
  • Reduced technical and financial risk
  • Early visibility of new IP and product opportunities
  • A stronger platform for follow-on funding and commercial scale-up

The key is timing: businesses need to engage with universities early, before applications are submitted, to co-design projects that solve real market problems, not just academic ones.
