Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) – How It Helps Small & Medium Businesses
The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) is a federal government-backed investor that helps small and medium businesses access affordable finance to invest in clean energy and energy-saving equipment.
The CEFC does not usually fund SMEs directly. Instead, it works with banks and specialist lenders to make it easier, and cheaper, for businesses to finance eligible assets.
How SMEs Can Access CEFC-Backed Funding
Most small and medium businesses access CEFC support through asset finance products offered by participating lenders.
This can include finance for:
- Solar and battery systems
- Energy-efficient plant and equipment
- Heating, cooling and lighting upgrades
- Low-emissions or electric vehicles
- Other technologies that reduce energy use or emissions
CEFC involvement often allows lenders to offer:
- Lower interest rates
- Longer loan terms
- Improved access to finance for clean energy assets
Businesses apply directly with the lender, not with the CEFC. A current list of participating finance providers is available on the CEFC website.
What CEFC Funding Is Not Typically Used For
The CEFC also supports several investment funds, but these are generally not suitable for most SMEs:
Innovation Fund
Managed by Virescent Ventures, this fund focuses on later-stage, commercial-scale clean energy projects. These investments are usually large and complex and are not aimed at typical small businesses.
Clean Energy Seed Fund
Managed by Artesian, this fund invests in high-growth clean energy startups developing new technologies, software or business models. It is designed for venture-style startups rather than established SMEs.
When CEFC Support Makes Sense for Your Business
CEFC-backed finance is most relevant if your business:
- Wants to reduce energy costs
- Is upgrading or replacing equipment
- Is considering solar, batteries or EVs
- Needs asset finance rather than grants
