My takeaways from the State of Australian Startup Funding 2025 Report
by Cut Through Ventures and Folklore Ventures
From what I read in the State of Australian Startup Funding 2025 Report, Australian startup funding in 2025 is not dead. It is selective.
Capital is selective, not scarce
Capital is flowing toward teams demonstrating discipline, defensibility and clear execution. Investors describe a two-speed market. Startups with AI at their core and strong early metrics are still seeing fast-moving rounds, while others face longer timelines and tougher diligence.
The time from first conversation to first cheque has stretched from roughly six months to closer to twelve. This is less about capital availability and more about investors working harder to reduce execution risk.
Distribution separates momentum from noise
Building products has become easier. Scaling them has not. Distribution now outweighs product alone. Teams that can demonstrate repeatable customer acquisition, retention and capital efficiency are standing out, while those relying on product strength without a clear growth engine are finding raises harder.
People and execution risk are front and centre
As diligence deepens, investors are placing more weight on teams. More than 70 percent of Australian startups that fail or stall between Series A and C cite people or leadership issues as a primary factor. As a result, the team is no longer a supporting factor. It is central to the investment decision.
Founder capacity is the hidden constraint
This is where capital and people connect. Capital is no longer the main constraint on the ecosystem. Founder capacity is. Clarity, energy, decision making quality and emotional resilience are now critical advantages in raising capital and deploying it effectively once funding lands.
AI is expected, but not sufficient
AI still matters. But the bar has moved. Workflow integration beats AI branding. In 2025, AI only builds confidence when it clearly drives growth, retention and defensibility.
