Control the Controllables

You can get business advice from the most unusual places.  And here is another example.

On the first page of Glenn McGrath’s book “Test of Will”, he states the reason for his success as one of Australia’s greatest fast bowlers was because he “controlled the controllables”.

In Glenn’s own words, everything he did on the cricket field was aimed at controlling all that he could, and not stressing about things were out of his hands.  For example, he could control the ball to force a batter to sky a ball, but he could not control whether the catch was taken or not.

How apt are those words for everyone today!

You can’t control what the government does in relation to COVID-19.  You can just control how you react to it.

Business owners in particular, don’t let the restrictions in place in respect of COVID-19 control you.

Instead think of the things you can control and innovate in your business.

For example, just today I learnt of a Sydney company that specialised in pop up stages for concerts.  Business closed overnight. Everyone was laid off.

But rather than rolling over and dying, a week later, they started designing, manufacturing and selling stand-up desks and other isolation office furniture.  All the staff they laid off, plus more are now rehired and working.

If you have laid off staff and get them back under the JobKeeper payment, make sure they are working on innovating your business.  Make sure they are working on how you can have a better business.  Better Service, Better Value, Better Speed.

History teaches us that those who “control the controllables” and implement positive changes in times of depression and recession, are the businesses that achieve way in excess of the average once these times pass.

So, in the words of Glenn McGrath, “control the controllables” and innovate now.
