Leadership lesson from the Australian political response to Covid-19

Leadership lesson – Often it is hard to pinpoint exactly what you need to do as a leader.  It is relatively easier to look at what others have done poorly and avoid repeating their mistakes.

One such great example of what not to do is being played out in Australia with the way our politicians are handling Covid-19.

Let’s start with the National Cabinet formed to “ensure that we get coordinated response across the country to the many issues that relate to the management of the coronavirus”.    In business, you could liken this to a strategy group set up to ensure that the business wide strategy was agreed upon and then delivered in a coordinated manner.

I don’t know about you, but I have not seen a coordinated response from the states under the National Council.  Each state appears to have done different things at different times.  Even having different ways to manage the same functions such as hotel quarantine and contact tracing.

We are seeing the impact of this now with Victoria with about 26% of Australia’s population having over 68% of total Covid-19 cases and deaths.

The leadership lesson for business leaders here is, if you are setting up for a coordinated strategy across your business, make sure each of the key players are aligned and actually coordinated.  Otherwise I can just about guarantee a 100% failure rate on achieving your business strategy.
