Even the best laid plans need to change

At the beginning of this month we started on a small holiday planning to follow the Darling River in NSW from the Murray River to Bourke.  All planned out, knew the side trips and what we wanted to see and do.

Now a couple of days into the trip the weather forecast predicted rain in a couple of days.  Great for western NSW farmers, but not so good for us because our trip was about 1,000 kms of dirt road driving.

We had a choice, follow our planned route and find ourselves stuck somewhere with the dirt roads closed or take a different route.

We did take a different route and did get stuck for just over a day.  But if we followed our original route, we would still be stuck over a week later, potentially 100’s of kms from a town.

And it’s the same in business, you can have it all planned out but a change in weather, like the restrictions imposed under Covid, can force a change.  Even the best laid plans need to change.

Do you stay with your original plans and potentially get stuck for a long time?  Or take a diversion, even if you a stuck for a short time, and then keep moving forward again.

As you can see from our trip, we took the option that let us keep moving forward, even if not in the original planned direction.
