Another Leadership lesson from the Australian political response to Covid-19

Here is another leadership lesson we can learn from the response to Covid-19 in Australia.

This is around the need for consistent and clear communication and messaging.

From my perspective a lot of communication and messaging around Covid-19 has been very inconsistent and confusing.    For example:

• We could have 10 people at a wedding at one stage, but 20 people at a funeral in the same church.
• I go into a country pub for less than 2 minutes to ask directions and I need to fill in the Covid register. I go next door to the country store, spending 15 minutes in there without the need to fill in anything. 
• You can have 20 school kids in a class room, but they could not play sport with the same kids.
• One week we are told masks are not needed, another time we are told we should wear them.
• My wife can attend a demonstration around vaccines, but a week later can’t attend one on Black Lives Matter.

All of these inconsistent and sometimes conflicting messages just confuse people.

The leadership lesson for business leaders here is, if you want your team to all be moving in the one direction, you must be delivering consistent and clear messages.  And if you need to change direction, just be clear about why you are doing this.
