WFH will not be the new normal

I keep seeing many comments about work from home WFM, being the way of the future.

My view has always been, unless we have a significant change in employment laws in Australia, I never believed that the WFH environment would dominate to the extent many people believe.

And it seems that data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) yesterday supports my view.

WFH will not be the new normal

The Business Indicators, Business Impacts of COVID-19 report shows that prior to COVID, 71% of businesses had no one working from home.  This dropped to 56% currently, but will increase back to 66% once restrictions are lifted and conditions stabilise.  Not a dramatic change in my view.

And to me this makes sense when you actually think about the number of jobs that can’t be done from home especially non-white collar work.

Yes, we will see some movement in white collar workers, but once employers start to understand their legal obligations, I am expecting a push to get people back in the office.

Just wait for the workers compensation claims from people working in unsuitable work environments such as their kitchen table or even their bed.

And if you don’t believe me have a look at the recent case Workers’ Compensation Nominal Insurer v Hill [2020] NSWCA 54 where an employer was held liable for the death of an employee in their own home.  The children of the deceased were awarded $450,000.  How many small business owners would want that hanging over their business?
