A powerful reminder of the value of networking the right way

When I first started networking years and years ago, it was all about me.  Flashing the business card and moving on to the next person, never really listening to that person.

But I learned very quickly that this was not the right way to network.  Instead, I started to take the time to learn what the other person did and tried to build relationships.

And I got a powerful reminder of the value of networking the right way over the past 2 weeks.

I was talking to some different people about the challenges they were facing. These challenges were not in my area of expertise.  But interestingly enough, I knew people I had met at networking events who had expertise in the applicable area.  So, I arranged for some introductions and gave the people I was speaking to, a possible path forward.

And conversely someone I knew through a networking event, introduced me to another person with challenges in my area of expertise.

That’s the value of networking the right way.  Don’t constantly focus on selling yourself.  Yes, you can do that sometimes, but focus on how you can help people by listening to them.
