Business Survival Guide – Look after your, your family and your teams, health and well-being

To help your business survive and thrive during these uncertain times you need to look after your, and your team’s health and well-being.

You as the business owner will struggle to run your business if either you or your immediate family gets sick.  And your business will struggle greatly if say a quarter of your team is out of action.

Apart from getting sick themselves, you and your team can be out of action for many reasons including:

  • having to care for friends and family members who get sick.
  • Involuntary quarantining for being on the wrong place at the wrong time. Just last week I had a client who experienced the issue of a staff member who had been on the same flight as someone now with coronavirus.  They had to quarantine themselves and be tested for the virus.  The office was shut down with people trying to work remotely.  Thankfully this staff member was not infected, so the office could return to normal a couple of days later.

What do you do to protect the health and well-being of your staff?

Firstly, you need to follow all the health guidelines about your personal hygiene as quoted by the health authorities.

Secondly, you need to comply with your legal obligation to provide a safe workspace for your staff.  To do this in respect of the coronavirus you need to formally advise your staff of:

  • the need to follow all the health guidelines about personal hygiene;
  • the need to self-isolate if they have travelled through a high risk country as defined by the Department of Health in the proceeding 14 days; and,
  • the requirement that anyone with cold or flu like symptoms should not attend work and should work remotely if at all possible.

There will be concerns from some people here who may not have enough sick leave for this.  I would suggest this is dealt with on a case by case basis by the business owner or other senior management.
