December 2020 Australian Jobs Data

The December 2020 Australian Jobs Data released yesterday shows another 50,000 people being employed in December.  Women made up 92 per cent of this growth with nearly 46,000 jobs.

Between February and May, there was over 877,000 jobs lost.  Between June and December, 784,000 of these jobs have been recovered.  Employment is now just 0.7 percent below February.

But we are experiencing a shift in employment.  Nearly 557,000 of these employed people found part time or casual work.  As a result, in December, there were nearly 32,000 more part time workers than there was in February.  Full time employment in the December is still over 125,000 below February.

Once again, the change in employment is not consistent across Australia.  QLD gained nearly 37,000 jobs, more than recovering the 20,000 jobs lost in November.  QLD now has more employed persons than it did on February 2019 before the Covid-19 shutdowns.

NSW on the other hand lost 17,000 jobs in December, possibly tied to the Northern Beaches Covid-19 cluster and the associated lockdowns and border closures with other states.  Victoria continues on its job growth path.  But NSW continues to have lower unemployment rates than Victoria and QLD.
