Energy Savings Schemes
Money from Government legislation to reduce your power costs
Electricity usage is often a cost that businesses can get miss when looking at reducing costs.
Many businesses look at the price they are paying for power. But you should also look at the amount of electricity you actually use.
Clearly, if you upgrade your lighting and other electrical equipment to more efficient variants, lower usage will be reflected in lower power bills.
But on top of reducing electricity usage, you may also be able to get a rebate from the electricity companies on the cost of the upgrade.
Especially if you are in NSW or Victoria under their energy savings schemes, called NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) and Victorian Energy Upgrades Program (VEU).
Both of these schemes operate to create certificates that are sold to the electricity retailers. You as the business owner can then use the proceeds of the sale of these certificates to offset against the cost of the upgrade.
So, you win with lower usage and a rebate on the cost of the upgrade. And this does not include any rate savings you may negotiate.
How do the certificates work?
In NSW these certificates are called Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs). In Victoria they are called Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs).
You need to partner with an Accredited Provider who will measure and verify the electricity savings. The Accredited Provider can then turn these savings into the certificates (ESC’s in NSW and VEEC’s in Victoria).
They then sell these certificates to the electricity companies, which is passed onto you either as a rebate or discounted products.
How do you find an Accredited Provider to partner with?
