How Businesses Can Use AEA Innovate to Co-Develop and Scale Technology with Universities
If your business already has a proven concept but needs support to scale, validate, or commercialise it, AEA Innovate is designed to bridge the gap between successful R&D and real-world deployment.
AEA Innovate (part of the Australia’s Economic Accelerator program) provides up to $5 million in government funding to support mid-stage commercialisation projects. These projects focus on taking technologies that work in controlled or pilot environments and proving they can operate at commercial or industrial scale.
While universities must apply as the Lead Organisation, strong and committed industry partners are essential. Businesses play a central role in shaping projects around real market demand, operational realities, and commercial outcomes.
As a business partner, you can be involved in:
- Defining the commercial use case and scale-up requirements
- Testing technology in real-world or near-commercial environments
- Providing operational sites, data, equipment, or specialist staff
- Contributing to manufacturing, supply chain, regulatory and go-to-market planning
- Co-designing pathways to customers, licensing, or spin-out opportunities
Projects must align to national priority sectors such as advanced manufacturing, ag-tech, med-tech, renewables, AI, space and critical minerals, making this especially relevant for industrial and technology-driven SMEs.
Partner organisations are expected to contribute to the project (minimum 50% combined cash and/or in-kind across all partners), but in return you gain:
