Lessons business owners can learn from Peter V’landys and the NRL’s Project Apollo

For those who don’t know, Project Apollo was the NRL’s attempt to restart its stalled 2020 season on 28 May 2020.

There were lots of knockers out there saying it would never happen. But last night it did happen.

Yes, they had problems on the way, yes there were no crowds, but NRL was the first team professional sport back up and running in Australia.

And the person who has impressed me the most was the NRL chairman Peter V’landys.

His dogged determination to:

set the timeframe in the face of criticism
develop a plan to achieve this.
accept that there would be challenges, but to meet each of these head on and work through them the best they could.

In my personal view, the leadership of Peter V’landys during this crisis has been outstanding.

And that’s the lesson for many business owners out there. Take a leaf out of Peter V’landys playbook, create your own Project Apollo and:

Don’t sit back and wait for someone else to make decisions for your business
Control what you can.
Don’t just do what you were doing. Look critically at your business and if you need to change things, then do it.
Communication is key.
Prepare the team.
