Lessons business owners can learn from the NRL’s Project Apollo

What is your project apollo
Love it or hate it, the current actions of the National Rugby League (NRL) and its Project Apollo can teach business owners a couple of lessons.

The NRL, like many other professional sports, were greatly impacted by the COVID-19 shutdowns.  Their major revenue source is from television rights and sponsorship.  With no games happening, there is minimal revenue.  But rather than sitting back and waiting for things to happen, the NRL has launched Project Apollo, and planning for the 2020 season to be relaunched on 28 May 2020.

Irrespective of whether the NRL season relaunches or not on this date, the lessons business owners can learn from the NRL include:

  1. Don’t sit back and wait for someone else to make decisions for your business. If you are impacted by a COVID-19 shutdown, create your own Project Apollo and start planning now for what you will need to re-open.  For example, if you are a pub or cafe:
    • How will you protect your staff? Will you need screens at the counters?
    • What stock will you need to order?
    • Which key staff are critical to relaunch?
  1. Control what you can. The NRL are already planning what the revised competition will look like and spoken to their broadcast partners about this. For example, if you are a pub or cafe:
  • What new systems or processes should you implement?
  • What training do you need to do?
  • How will you let your customers know you are open.
  1. Communication is key. The NRL has communicated with the clubs, the players and key partners to make sure everyone is comfortable with their plans.  Once again, if you are a pub or cafe:
  • Talk to your staff to find out what they need to feel safe when your re-open.
  • Talk to your suppliers to see the time frames they need to supply what you need.
  • Talk to your customers to see if there is something else they want which you can supply.
  1. Prepare the team. The NRL knows that the competition can’t just start on 28 May.  Players need time to get ready, so they are planning for training to commence from 4 May.

So, what is your Project Apollo to relaunch your business?
