QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants
Applications open on 16 August for the QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants to help QLD businesses impacted by the July and August 2021 lockdowns.

The QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants
The QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants will provide grants of between $1,000 and $30,000 to eligible small and medium businesses and not for profit organisations, and large tourism and hospitality businesses across QLD affected by the July and August 2021 lockdowns.
These grants can be used for business expenses.
How Much is the Grant?
The amount of 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants you receive depends on the payroll size of your eligible business or not for profit organisation.
If your business is eligible, and you employ staff with a payroll of less than $10 million, your one off grant is:
- $10,000 if your payroll is under $1.3 million.
- $15,000 if your payroll is between $1.3 million and $10 million.
If you are a large tourism or hospitality business and your payroll is over $10 million, your one off grant is $30,000.
If you are a Queensland-based non-employing sole trader you may be eligible for a one off grant of $1,000.
Eligibility Rules – all businesses and non employing sole traders
Irrespective if you are a non employing sole trader, a small or medium businesses, not for profit organisations, or large tourism and hospitality businesses, to be eligible for the QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants your business must:
- have an Australian Business Number (ABN) continuously held from 30 June 2021.
- be registered for GST.
- have QLD headquarters (i.e., your principal place of business is located in QLD) and have been trading in QLD on 31 July 2021. If your head office is in another state, you are not eligible.
- have turnover more than of $75,000 during any of the 2018–19, 2019–20 or 2020–21 financial years (some exceptions for new businesses).
- demonstrate the business or not for profit organisation was directly or indirectly impacted by a lockdown event. Directly means you could not operate because of the lockdown, so in effect your business was in the lockdown area. Indirectly means you were in a lockdown area and could operate but on a limited basis or you are located outside of a lockdown area and your business was impacted by the lockdown. For example, an accommodation provider in Townsville who lost bookings from people who could not travel.
- demonstrate or declare a reduction in turnover of 30% or more during a nominated 7-day period which must include at least 1 full day of a lockdown event (see below) when comparing against turnover achieved during the same 7-day period in July or August 2019. Or if the 2019 period does not indicate a typical weekly turnover, include another comparable period (e.g., the same period in July/August 2020).
Note:
- Business earning passive income such as rent, interest or dividends are ineligible
- You can only claim one grant per ABN
- You can’t get this grant and the Federal Gov’ts Covid 19 Disaster Payment (especially relevant for non employing sole traders)
Eligibility Rules – Small and medium businesses and not for profit organisations
In addition to the eligibility rules noted above, to be eligible for the QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants your small or medium business must have an annual payroll in Queensland:
- of not more than $1.3 million to get the $10,000 grant; or
- between $1.3 million and $10 million to get the $15,000 grant.
Eligibility Rules – Large tourism and hospitality businesses and not for profit organisations
In addition to the eligibility rules noted above, to be eligible for the QLD 2021 COVID-19 Business Support Grants, your large tourism or hospitality business must:
- operate in the tourism and hospitality sector – determined by the ANZSIC codes on the Australian Business register
- have an annual payroll in Queensland of more than $10 million. Note if you have payroll of under $10 million you may be eligible as a small or medium business.
Lockdown Event
Lockdown events and the impacted areas include:
- South East Queensland lockdown 31 July 2021 – 8 August 2021. The Applicable local government areas are: Brisbane City Council; Gold Coast City Council; Ipswich City Council; Lockyer Valley Regional Council; Logan City Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council; Noosa Shire Council; Redland City Council; Scenic Rim Regional Council; Somerset Regional Council; Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
- Cairns and Yarrabah lockdown 8 – 11 August 2021 covering Cairns Regional Council and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council
- any further Queensland lockdowns in August 2021.
What can the funding be used for?
The funds may be used for business expenses. Note the QLD Govt will ask you later how you spent the money.

Applications close 16 November 2021 for businesses and on 30 November for non employing sole traders. These must be done by you. Your accountant can not submit these.
