Today I want to talk about another strategy out of my Business Survival Guide – and it’s all about the importance of communication.  Communicating with your clients or your customers, your staff and your partners.

In terms of your clients or customers there is 2 key messages.

The first one is your clients or customers need to be confident that you will be able to deliver what they are buying from you.  You need to talk to them, explain your situation and get them confident and comfortable that you are going to be able to deliver.  You don’t want them buying from a competitor because they think you can’t deliver.

The other part about it is that they have probably experienced some changes as well and what they want today may not be what they wanted a month ago.  So, you need to talk to them and understand what they want today so you can deliver what they need and you can make them comfortable and confident that you will be able to deliver that.

Now in terms of your partners, once you understand what your customers want, obviously you are going to need to work with your partners to make sure they are able to deliver.  And if they are not able to deliver, you go and find another partner to go through.

There is no point promising something to your clients if your partners can’t currently deliver it.

If we are talking about staff, the biggest issue is staff morale.  You don’t want staff to be isolated, confused and not sure what is going on.

If your customers what something different, your staff need to know so they can deliver it.  If you have been impacted by the downturn, your staff need to understand what is happening.  Keep them in the loop.  The last thing you want is for staff to feel isolated, because that impacts on their morale and this impacts on their ability to serve the customer, which impacts on your customer and potentially on your sales.

Fundamentally, communication is key at this point in time.  You need to be speaking to your customers, your staff and your suppliers or partners regularly.

Draw up a list of your top 10 or 20 people and make sure you are regularly contacting them and keeping them in the loop with what is happening with your business and clarifying what they want from you and what you need from them
