With talk of the “Great Resignation” coming will you employ Unvaccinated Staff?

If we go back to May before the current shutdowns there were labour shortages in Australia just about across all industries and occupations.

Businesses were already finding it hard to find new staff.  Businesses started to actively poach staff from other businesses, making it hard for these businesses to retain staff

This was already having a number of adverse impacts on businesses including:

  • Businesses were losing good staff and struggling to replace them – is this what Australia will experience as part of the “Great Resignation” being seen in the USA?
  • Business are having to increase the pay for current staff to keep them.
  • Business need to pay the replacement person more than person who left, causing pay imbalances in the team and more pressure to give other staff a pay rise.
  • Business owners are forced to accept second best as they can’t attract the same quality of people they already have / had.

I know one business owner whose business is fine revenue wise at the moment, but they are losing staff and struggling to replace them.  Apart from the pay rises this business owner is having to incur for both new and existing staff, all the disruption to the team and the inability to replace people is placing huge pressure on the business to deliver the work they have.  This can in turn lead to customer dis-satisfaction and the chance of repeat business starts to drop.  Their revenue next year may not be fine!

Now let’s add onto this a potential business requirement that all staff have to be vaccinated.

The pool of people you are able to attract is potentially reduced by 20% to 30% being the 10% to 20% for those who are not fully vaccinated and those who are fully vaccinated but pro-choice.

Now you are going in to a labour market that is already hard to find good staff and potentially making it harder.

If you can find someone, it is likely that you will have to pay more to get lesser quality person in your business

What impact will this have on your business?

What to Do?

At the end of the day, it is your business and you can make decisions over whom you employ (as long as you don’t beach any law such as discrimination and workplace laws etc).

But just make sure you are not making an emotional decision to ban unvaccinated staff and contractors.

Instead, with the power in the hands of the employee in many cases right now, be open to doing what is best for your business for the long term.
